Transition policy

AROHA EARLY LEARNING CENTRE:

Transition policy:

Rationale:

Transition is a time of change, there can be discomfort, fear, a time when an individual is outside of his/her comfort zone.

At the Aroha Early Learning Centre we recognise this and will put in place supportive measures, these will help the individual emotionally in coping successfully with transition.

Policy Statement:

The transition period will occur over a length of time according to the individual learning rate & pace; there will be flexibility in recognition of the learners learning style; and readiness for the acceptance of change will be observed and documented, if required, on each individual according to need.

Procedures:

  • Documentation will be recorded as required,
  • Documentation will include: readiness, steps taken, action followed, individual reaction/response to change,
  • Routines will be kept as similar as possible: moving into the transition period and after according to need,
  • Those moving into transition can include: 2-2 ½ yr/new to centre/3 ½ -5yr children, families/whanau, cultures, ethnic groups; small steps will be followed as part of the process, these steps will move according to the need of the individual,
  • All action taken will take into account according to the individual’s readiness and adaptation to the change,
  • Teaching staff will provide ongoing explanations & will model required changes in behaviour required in the transition change for the meeting of the new environment,
  • Teachers will provide familiar resources, situations, waiata, karakia, words during the transition period,
  • Teachers will be co-constructors during the transition period, learning along-side and with the learner,
  • Preparation leading up to the transition will be discussed in a collaborative manner, asking reflective questions during the process,
  • There will be ongoing communication with those involved in the transition process and their families/whanau, guardians, support services and other appropriate people involved,
  • Teachers will be accepting of differences during the process of transition, such as: when an individual chooses to follow a different approach, applying to cultural & or ethnicity in particular.

Aim:

We aim to respect where the individual is at; we do not wish them to develop an anxiety at any time during the transition process; we wish the individual to develop holistically making the transition with ease, comfort & trust.

We wish the individual to adjust to change with confidence.
